Your child's first class
Five parts, with no contact in any of them
Little Ones is for ages 3 to 5. Everything below happens on one mat, in a class that lasts as long as a snack break.
Step 1: At the door
Shoes go in the row, and water bottles go on the shelf. Your child chooses a spot on the mat, and you choose a spot on the bench.
Step 2: A circle and a bow
The class sits in a circle and the instructor says each name. Then everyone practices the bow, first sitting and then standing.
Step 3: Games with stances in them
Animal walks, a balance game and a freeze game teach the ready stance without a single drill. Turns are short, and watching is part of the game.
Step 4: A turn on the pad
Each child gets one gentle turn to tap a pad that an instructor holds. Nobody has to take it, and the game goes on either way.
Step 5: A bow out
The class bows out together. Your child looks at the belt on the wall, and a grown-up helps them find their shoes.
On the bench
Parents wait where they can see the mat
You are welcome to stay for the whole class. Some children look back at the bench for the first few minutes, and that is part of how a first class goes. An instructor stays close to any child who wants company, and the rest of the class carries on with the game.
